Tonight’s Work

October 25, 2011

Today I started a series of succulents. The first in this painting is Chalk Dudleya. I love seeing these grow on the rocky edges of canyons in Pinnacles National Monument and Upper Lopez Canyon. In the spring they are often surrounded by scattered carpets of moss and a Miners Lettuce at Pinnacles.

First day of Open Studio Tour I had a helper for a short while.

October 22, 2011

It was a great day for painting, cold drinks, meeting new people, family and friends. I even had help with my painting for a bit of time. Thank you helper.

Encaustic Barn Owl

October 20, 2011

I painted this Barn Owl on one of the cedar shingles intact after the demolition of the former roof of my studio. Most of the shingles, aka shakes, crumbled to bits

In My Studio

October 19, 2011

In my studio I am full of hope. I made an encaustic painting of a barn owl last week on a cedar shake shingle from the former roof of my studio. I am currently working on an oil of a Manzanita. My family and friends recently helped me put on a new roof. The old cedar shake roof was full of character and holes.

I tried to stop wanting to paint, but it didn’t work. It meant a multitude of things to me to get help with the new roof. I now have a better place to think and paint, and a dry, safe place to store the work I have done. I can also make large paintings again, and have an encaustic set up. Jade, my studio dog is more comfortable in there with me, and loves to stare at me when I’m least expecting it.

I value time spent between the studio and my garden. I bring my research from the outdoors back into my studio and garden. When I am in my studio I have hope that I will continue to see and learn for a lifetime. My studio isn’t grand, but where it is leading is big to me.  Thank you Ryan, Uncle Scott, Dad and Stephen, oh and Jyllian and Karen too for getting the ice, oh and mom too for saying it could be done and telling me people did want to help.
